In his book, The Medium is the Massage, Marshall McLuhan writes, "Media, by altering the environment, evokes in us unique ratios of sense perceptions. The extension of any one sense alters the way we think and act – the way we perceive the world. When these ratios change, men change."

In the mid-15th century, Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg applied the principle of a wine press to develop the technology of moveable type, and in the mid-19th century, Thomas Alva Edison used tin foil and a needle to create a toy-like device called the photograph.

Through the advent of these simple machines, media rapidly expanded our senses and changed our way of thinking, living, and expressing.

In both Gutenberg and Edison's age, many others attempted to alter media through a variety of different approaches. But as it happens, only the two of them have gone down in history. People with a profound curiosity in media revolution have ventured to "record" many things using a wide range of unique methods. One might even say that it is the experiments which have vanished in time that have served as the driving force for change in our lives.

The media revolution that is currently underway rivals the changes that occurred in Gutenberg and Edison's day. In our age, venturing to "record" things using a variety of curiosity-fueled methods is the domain of artists and designers. Conceiving of new media with a host of other people based on the free use of ideas and media by definition contains the potential to "change our perception of the world."

Organizing the phono/graph exhibition, originally held at Osaka's ddd Gallery in 2011, led me to a variety of ideas and interests. In presenting the exhibition in Dortmund, I convinced that the new interests and ideas that emerge from this collaborative effort are also likely to bring about some small change in our perception of the world.
